Each month we spotlight members of the Community Foundation of Broward’s Professional Advisors Council.
The PAC includes attorneys, CPAs and financial planners who help their clients achieve their charitable goals by collaborating with the Community Foundation. Council members have referred clients who establish charitable funds at the Foundation or who include the Foundation in their estate plans.
This month’s Q&A features PAC Member Lance Lvosky, CPA.
Lance, Managing Director for CBIZ, is a tax partner and leader of Private Client Services for the Southeast region. He provides tax planning and compliance services to individuals and families, family offices, and closely held businesses. He advises clients on business succession planning; real estate tax strategies; income, trust, and estate tax planning; asset distribution planning and funding of trusts; charitable giving and inter-generational family wealth.
Professional & Philanthropy
Q.What areas of planning do you focus on?
I focus on income tax planning and estate planning for entrepreneurs, business owners, and families with multi-generational wealth.
Q.What do you enjoy most about helping clients with long-term or legacy planning?
Knowing that I was part of my client’s advisory team that helped effectuate a long-term charitable gift is incredibly rewarding. There are so many wonderful charitable organizations in our community and providing guidance to clients in identifying and effectuating their legacy planning while obtaining tax benefits is a win-win.
Q.How do you approach conversations around charitable giving?
I always ask first if the client is interested in charitable giving or leaving a legacy. Once I know the client has interest, I ask clients if they have a charity or charities in mind or if they would like to be connected to a specific local charity that can facilitate their giving.
Q.Why is philanthropy important in a strong estate or financial plan?
Clients that have philanthropic intent need to understand that some of the most powerful tax benefits in the tax law are relating to charitable giving.
Q.How has partnering with the Community Foundation of Broward benefited your clients?
Clients really learn about all the initiatives the Community Foundation of Broward is doing in our community and once you sit down and understand the impact the Community Foundation has, clients are blown away. Without the Community Foundation, our community would not be where it is at today. Clients have also been able to make meaningful connections with other like-minded individuals.
Q.What advice would you offer advisors looking to include charitable planning in their practice?
Always ask your client if charitable giving is something they want to explore. Even clients that historically have not been charitable, you may be surprised to learn they have an interest in leaving a legacy as part of their estate planning.
Personal & Fun
Q.What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?
I am a former Division 1 tennis athlete. These days I play a mix of tennis, padel, and pickle ball. Tennis is still the hardest sport!
Q.What is a favorite Broward restaurant, coffee spot, or local gem?
At home I eat fully seed oil free, which is hard to accomplish when eating out, but I have been really digging the food and ambiance at Florida Room located at The Fort, one of the largest pickleball facilities in the country. They are completely seed oil free and provide an elevated dining experience.
Q.What is one word colleagues would use to describe you?
