17th Annual Joint Tax and Estate Seminar emphasizes philanthropy through retirement planning

December 6, 2018

Nearly 500 attorneys, CPAs and financial advisors on Dec. 5 learned ways to make local philanthropy a valuable part of their clients’ wealth management.

They gathered for the 17th Annual Joint Tax & Estate Planning Seminar, presented by the Community Foundation of Broward, United Way of Broward County and the Jewish Community Foundation of Broward County.

The event, held at Nova Southeastern University’s Fort Lauderdale/Davie Campus, highlighted ways to make philanthropy a bigger part of retirement planning.

High-net-worth clients who are interested in charitable giving expect their professional advisors to ask them about philanthropy and suggest options, said attorney Judy B. Bonevac, who represented the Community Foundation of Broward as co-chairperson of the seminar.

“They are looking for us, their trusted advisors, to kind of guide them along the way,” Bonevac said. “It’s important for me to know what they care about, the issues they care about, what type of legacy they want to leave in the future and just what their goals are.”

The tax benefits of giving through a retirement plan can accomplish both charitable and financial goals for clients, according to attorney and author Natalie B. Choate, the seminar’s keynote speaker.

Her suggestions included the use of charitable remainder trusts for clients interested in philanthropy. “This should be in every estate planners’ toolbox,” Choate said.

The Community Foundation of Broward partners with professional advisors to create personalized giving strategies for clients interested in local philanthropy.

Advisors who make referrals to the Community Foundation are invited to join the Foundation’s Professional Advisors Council. In addition to giving guidance to the Foundation, this elite group of attorneys, accountants and financial advisors also gets the chance to network and hear from legal and financial experts at breakfasts and luncheons hosted by the Foundation.
