New ‘Gold Seal’ Standard Bolsters Grantmaking Transparency

July 24, 2025

The Community Foundation of Broward now requires nonprofit organizations to achieve a Gold Seal of Transparency from Candid to be eligible to receive Community Foundation grants.

Candid is a nonprofit that provides social sector data, tools and other resources for nonprofits nationwide. Donors and other funders can use Candid’s GuideStar to verify and research nonprofits that are aligned with their priorities.

Candid’s Seal of Transparency program helps nonprofits stand out among the many organizations in our community and across the country that are seeking charitable support. Candid awards Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum Seals, with organizations earning a higher rating by providing more information about their financials, leadership team and the impact of their work.

By achieving Candid’s Gold Seal, nonprofit organizations show they are committed to transparency and accountability. Undergoing Candid’s review of financial information, organizational strategies and results helps nonprofits build trust with donors and other funders, like the Community Foundation.

The Community Foundation’s Broward Center for Nonprofit Excellence offers training and other resources that can help nonprofits prepare for achieving Candid’s Gold Seal.

“We’re excited to introduce the Gold Seal of Transparency requirement as a way to not only build efficiency into the grant application process, but also to empower nonprofits to really stand out, build trust and strengthen connections with donors, funders and the Broward community,” said Cathy Brown, Director of the Community Foundation’s Broward Center for Nonprofit Excellence.

Leading By Example

As the Community Foundation adds the gold seal requirement to our grant application eligibility, please know that we already hold ourselves to an even higher level of excellence. This year, the Community Foundation maintained our Platinum Seal of Transparency from Candid.

Our Platinum rating from Candid is another example of how the Community Foundation prioritizes setting high standards and incorporating best practices to show we are an impactful, trustworthy champion for local philanthropy. More than two decades ago, we became the first community foundation in Florida to earn accreditation by the National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations. By going through the rigorous steps to maintain our accreditation, we continue our commitment to accountability and excellence as a national leader in philanthropy.
