During Black History Month, we are celebrating the Black community’s deep commitment to charitable giving that transforms lives and shapes a brighter future.
Throughout our more than 40-year history, the Community Foundation of Broward has partnered with local philanthropists and community leaders to forge collaborations, remove barriers to success and invest in opportunities to help make life better for everyone who calls Broward home.
“Cherish Diversity” is one of the five values that guides the Community Foundation’s leadership initiatives and community grantmaking. Since 2022, we have increased outreach efforts to engage and partner with more Black philanthropists who are creating lasting impact in our community.
These new collaborations have resulted in a 71 percent increase in charitable funds established by Black philanthropists at the Community Foundation.
Here are a few examples of the dedicated, local philanthropists partnering with us to make a lasting difference:

Burnadette Norris-Weeks and Aaron Weeks
Burnadette Norris-Weeks & Aaron Weeks established an Endowed Donor-Advised Fund at the Community Foundation to ensure permanent support for promoting racial justice, equity, diversity and inclusion. They have joined our growing group of Community Builders – visionary philanthropists who partner with the Community Foundation to create endowed charitable funds of $1 million or more to shape a brighter future for Broward. Jonathan and Timothy Allen
Jonathan and Timothy Allen partner with the Community Foundation to carry on their trailblazing father’s legacy of breaking down barriers to achievement. By establishing Endowed Scholarship Funds in honor of their father W. George Allen – who led the legal fight to desegregate Broward schools – Jonathan and Timothy empower a new generation of students to pursue academic success. And through estate gift commitments to the Community Foundation, Jonathan and Timothy are furthering a family tradition of local philanthropy. CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE.

Samuel F. Morrison
Samuel F. Morrison, former director of Broward County’s libraries, led the fundraising push to open the African American Research Library and Cultural Center in Fort Lauderdale – a treasured community gathering place where education, the arts and history foster understanding and forge connections. Samuel continues to give back to the community by partnering with the Community Foundation for his local philanthropy, which includes creating an Endowed Designated Fund to ensure ongoing support for the AALRCC.
