One of the Community Foundation of Broward’s most important roles is to keep our fundholders, Legacy Society members and other community partners informed, engaged and connected on issues affecting life in Broward.
That’s why we want you to know more about a proposed amendment to Florida’s constitution, which could lower your property taxes but also affect many of the local government services in our community.
During the Nov. 3 election, Florida voters will consider Amendment 3, a homestead property tax ballot measure. It is intended to address housing affordability and could affect our community in many ways – from household budgets to the local services we all rely on.
To help raise awareness about Amendment 3, the Community Foundation of Broward partnered with United Way of Broward, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance, Broward Workshop and Tower Forum to host a balanced, nonpartisan conversation – held via Zoom on Oct. 6 – with experts on the issue. If Amendment 3 passes, and the projected cuts to local services follow, we can expect an increased demand for philanthropic support in our community and across the state. Please keep in mind that local philanthropy is relied on to fill in the gaps in community services, to complement other resources and to explore solutions to local challenges, which local government can then implement across the community. Philanthropic support won’t be enough to replace the projected loss of public sector funding that could result from Amendment 3.
We hope you find these resources helpful. We also hope you share them with others so that our community can make an informed decision about this important amendment, which could have far-reaching effects for years to come.
