New Support for Nonprofits Helping Youth with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

Capacity-Building Grants to Bolster Independence and Opportunity for Young People with IDD

September 30, 2026

The Community Foundation of Broward is offering new “Pathways to Possibility” grants to help nonprofits strengthen the network of support available for young people with autism, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and other intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).

These grants will improve, expand or launch high-quality transition services provided by local nonprofits dedicated to helping individuals with IDD and their families. The grants are made possible by the Community Foundation’s groundbreaking collaboration with The Taft Foundation.

Nonprofits can apply for up to $50,000 each under one of these two pathways:

  • Pathway A (Established Nonprofits): For organizations with demonstrated experience providing transition services to youth and young adults ages 12-26 with IDD.
  • Pathway B (Emerging Nonprofits): For organizations that would like to begin providing high-quality transition services to youth and young adults ages 12-26 with IDD.

The grants will support stronger, more accessible programs that expand opportunity and independence for people with IDD. Eligible activities include:

  • Adapting successful models for young adults without IDD to serve young adults with IDD or launching and improving transition programs and services.
  • Building staff capacity, accessibility and participant support.
  • Strengthening partnerships, referrals, data and evaluation.

Grant applications open on Oct. 30th and are due by 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 30. Nonprofits can apply online using the Community Foundation’s grants applications portal. CLICK HERE to reach the Community Foundation grants applications portal.

What is IDD?

Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) is an umbrella term used to describe a range of conditions that typically begin during childhood and can affect learning, behavior, communication and daily functioning.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that about 1 in 6 children in the United States has a developmental disability. IDD can include: Autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, intellectual disability, specific learning disability, speech or language impairment, emotional or behavioral disability, traumatic brain injury, fragile X syndrome, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, developmental delays and more.

Collaboration Fuels New Grants

Earlier this year, the Community Foundation announced a new collaboration with The Taft Foundation to advance opportunities for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Broward County.

While the Community Foundation has supported organizations serving the IDD community in various ways for years, this initiative is our first formal grantmaking program dedicated specifically to advancing services, supports and opportunities for people with IDD. Through this partnership, The Taft Foundation and the Community Foundation are launching a targeted grants initiative to strengthen coordinated support for helping youth and young adults with IDD transition successfully into adulthood.
