History

1984–1989

  • Community Foundation of Broward founded by Libby and Jack Deinhardt.
  • Libby Deinhardt serves as full time volunteer Executive Director
  • Board of Directors formed
  • Ambassador Circle established to offset operating expenses
  • Number of Funds grows to 50, with assets of $2.5 million
  • Total grants exceed $22,000

1990-1995

  • Community Foundation takes leadership role in HIV/AIDS prevention education. Receives $1 million matching grants program through National AIDS Fund
  • Receives first bequest of $1.5 million
  • Charles Stewart Mott Foundation awards $100,000 grant for administrative endowment
  • Foundation’s first hurricane relief effort
  • Libby Deinhardt retires after nine years
  • Jan Crocker appointed Foundation’s first salaried President
  • Foundation’s leadership role on state of Broward’s children recognized through two grants from Ford Foundation
  • 10th anniversary in new downtown location
  • $3 million agency endowment established by Museum of Science and Discovery
  • Grants of more than $3 million awarded in first 10 years
  • Assets of $11 million

1996-2000

  • Foundation creates Nonprofit Resource Center
  • First annual scholarship luncheon
  • Name change from Broward Community Foundation to Community Foundation of Broward
  • Unique Lives & Experiences lecture series held with global celebrities. Proceeds create Women’s Fund at the Foundation
  • Foundation selected by The Kresge Foundation as one of six community foundations in the nation to participate in $11 million endowment challenge
  • $37 million in assets
  • Over $2 million in grants awarded in 2000

2001–2007

  • Foundation moves to expanded offices
  • Dedication of Deinhardt Community Room
  • Foundation launches national Strategic Technology Planning program in Broward
  • National partnership introduces Merrill Lynch Community Charitable Fund
  • Professional Advisors Committee established
  • First Legacy Luncheon held
  • Foundation leads capacity building for nonprofits, tackles national foster care issue and launches civic engagement initiative
  • Forms partnership with the Kresge E Foundation - exceeds goal by $1 million, results in $4 million in restricted dollars to benefit the community in perpetuity and $9 million for the endowments of 18 organizations.
  • 20th anniversary: Two decades…Countless Generations of Service – assets of $46 million and over $22 million in grants
  • New long range plan developed to take us through 2009
  • First community foundation to be deemed in full compliance with Council on Foundations National Standards in Florida
  • Receive grant from Atlantic Philanthropies to study civic engagement among baby boomers – Re-engage for Good.
  • Set record of $5 million in grants awarded in a single year.
