Footsteps in the Sand Awards
When it first appeared over two decades ago in New York City and San Francisco, AIDS was thought to be rare. Today, HIV is a disease that has killed more than 21 million people and infects an estimated 36 million people worldwide. AIDS is one of Florida’s top causes of death among young people and Ft. Lauderdale is home to the third highest number of U.S. pediatric cases. Scientific progress has been made, but it alone is not enough. More needs to be done to care for People Living with HIV (PLWH).
In response to devastation and fear surrounding this disease, five years ago, a compassionate donor established the Footsteps in the Sand Fund at the Community Foundation of Broward. Each year, through this Fund, the Foundation presents several Footsteps in the Sand awards, all of which include monetary tokens of appreciation given to deserving people with HIV/AIDS. Awards are given in 3 categories: Outstanding Volunteer, PLWH Program Leader, and One-time Experience.
The purpose of these awards is to recognize unselfish contributions made by people living with HIV who fight this disease through inspiring volunteer efforts, or who demonstrate outstanding leadership and courage in working to ease the struggle of fellow PLWH. These special recognitions also help make possible experiences that would otherwise be financially impossible for award recipients. The awards remind people living with HIV that they are not alone. They walk in the footsteps of those who have fought before them and who are memorialized by this fund. Perhaps most importantly, the Footsteps in the Sand awards remind us all of the need to eliminate the stigma often placed on people with HIV/AIDS, and the need to reduce transmission of the disease through public awareness.
